IT’S LIKE THUNDER & LIGHTENING

DAY TWENTY THREE

It was a dark and stormy day… but not so dark during the daytime.  It’s much darker now (at 10PM), but not as stormy.  That was the big news of the day.  Rumbling of thunder overhead shaking the house while rain poured into the streets and nearly washed my recycling bin away.

Other than that, today’s big event was removing the program that hijacked my browser.  See, the NaNoWriMo group I belong to was touting a program called OpenOffice (DON’T GO LOOK FOR IT!) for typing novels into… better than Word they pronounced it.  (Of computer1course, I’ve always said that WordPerfect was better than Word, but who listens to me?)  Anyway, on Saturday I thought I’d look it up, and found out it was a FREE download.  That should have tipped me off to begin with, but I’m a little out of touch with the technical world, and I didn’t give it a second thought.  I downloaded the file (which is a full suite of products just like Office is.) and then to my horror I found that my internet browser had been reset.  O MON DIEU!  What to do, what to do?  I tried removing the offending program (called SEARCH.FINDWIDE — avoid it!).  It did not remove.  I looked up how to remove it online and found some message boards with information, which I followed.  But there it was.  Now I was afraid to use any of the programs that I need to use a password for.  I was very distressed.  So I asked a tekky friend for advice.  He sent me a link that basically said to do what the message boards had said to do, but I did them (again) to no avail.  I was in a mild panic.  Then I found (quite by accident) the RESTORE program in Control Panel.  I’ve done a restore before, but not in years and I’d forgotten where it was.  Having found it, I ran it immediately, choosing the most recent date for a ‘restore’ date — one clearly before the dreaded download.  When the computer restarted, IT WAS STILL THERE.  OHNOOHNOOHNO what was I going to do????  I decided to try restore one more time, but using a much earlier date.   YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!  This time it worked and I was findwide free!  I did a happy dance of joy and ate some deep dish pizza casserole.  (No, no fermented grapes were consumed!)

The rest of my day was pretty mundane.  When I work full time, my day goes kind of like this:  Get up and have “breakfast” while getting ready for work, work till quittin time, houseworkcome home, make dinner, eat and watch TV, play on the computer, watch more TV from bed and then lights out.  It’s a routine I like.  I don’t get much done around the house, but I live alone and have few visitors so I don’t really get too excited about housework.  True, during this 30 days of Freedom, I really should be doing housework.  But today, with the thunder and rain and panic, I didn’t want to.  I pulled stuff out to go through, but… it really didn’t happen.  Maybe tomorrow is all I can say.

My days of freedom are waning.  I’m not ready to go back to a 5 night a week schedule.  And you would miss me because by the time I got home I’d be too pooped to write.  I wonder how this news will go over at the store?  <play dramatic music here, and fade to black….>
